Peddie School in Hightstown, N.J., is seeking an experienced fundraiser and manager for the position of Director of Major Gifts. The successful candidate will manage their own portfolio of prospects capable of making gifts and pledges of $100,000 or more and provide overall supervision of the major gifts program.

Founded in 1864, Peddie School is an independent, coeducational, college preparatory school of 545 students, grades 9 through post-graduate. It is primarily a boarding school, with 63 percent of students and 90 percent of the faculty living on campus. In addition to its engaged and accomplished student body, Peddie’s extraordinary resources include the highly professional, collaborative and dedicated faculty, an innovative and rigorous curriculum and an attractive, modern 280-acre campus located midway between New York City and Philadelphia.

Thanks to the generosity of Ambassador Walter H. Annenberg ’27 and other donors, Peddie now ranks among the most highly endowed independent schools in the nation. Its $344 million endowment enables the school to offer more than $8 million in financial aid to 40 percent of the student body.

This is an exciting time at Peddie under the leadership of Headmaster Peter Quinn who alongside Assistant Head for Development Karyn Vella, will embark upon an $80 to $100 million comprehensive campaign, the largest in the school’s history. Currently in the leadership phase, the campaign is focused on creating a culture of philanthropy while raising endowed funds for scholarship, faculty and programs, as well as for facilities and annual giving. The Director of Major Gifts will play a central role collaborating with school leadership, faculty, campaign volunteers and Alumni and Development colleagues to develop, plan and execute a successful campaign.

Reporting to the Assistant Head for Development, the Director of Major Gifts is responsible for managing the major gifts program as well as a portfolio of major gift prospects of alumni and parents. The successful candidate will have experience in identifying and qualifying prospects, engaging and cultivating current and prospective donors, designing and developing solicitation strategies and directly soliciting donors for major gifts. The Director is expected to close solicitations within a best practice standard of 18-24 months. This individual will also work closely with the Director of the Peddie Fund and Director of Gift Planning to ensure coordination between programs.

Principal duties include:

Major Gift Portfolio Management (65%)

  • Cultivate, solicit and steward a portfolio of 70-80+ alumni, parents and friends capable of making Peddie Fund leadership gifts of $10,000+ and gifts of $100,000+ for capital and endowment needs (travel required);
  • Achieve and document 60+ prospect visits per year as well as achieve an agreed upon number of leadership asks each year;
  • Prepare written donor proposals for major gift solicitations.

Major Gift Program Management (30%)

  • Develop and execute strategies to build a pipeline of future major gift prospects in partnership with annual giving and alumni relations;
  • Refine and manage the process and metrics needed to drive activity of frontline fundraisers, including report development, regular prospect management meetings and individual prospect review meetings with frontline fundraisers;
  • Coordinate an effective program for recognition and stewardship of major and special gifts donors in coordination with the Director of Donor Relations;
  • In coordination with the Director of Prospect Management and Research and the Director of Development Services, develop appropriate reports to support front-line fundraisers;
  • Recruit and supervise future major gift officers.

General Development Work and Administration (5%)

  • Attend and provide support for Alumni and Development events including, but not limited to, the meetings of the Peddie Leadership Council, Reunion Weekend and other local and regional Campaign-related and alumni events;
  • Serve as a spokesperson to all internal and external audiences on the importance of philanthropic support;
  • Have a visible presence on campus.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Minimum of five to seven years of front-line fundraising experience, preferably in major gifts, working within the full spectrum of development including cultivation, gift solicitations, stewardship and donor recognition;
  • Demonstrated ability to close major ($100,000-$999,999) and principal gifts ($1M+) in a relationship-based culture;
  • Experience managing volunteer groups is desirable;
  • Ability to travel frequently and attend evening and weekend functions when necessary;
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communications skills, characterized by the ability to listen, speak, and write well with a strong commitment to customer service;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and The Raiser’s Edge preferred.
  • Proven ability to work with a high level of independence as well as collaboratively within a team, maintain confidentiality, prioritize multiple projects simultaneously and manage time effectively.
